Quilt Design A Day

Just when I thought I couldn’t do much more, BAM! I decided that joining the Quilt Design A Day group with Anne from Play-Crafts would be the best thing ever. And it TOTALLY is!

The idea is to use one of the two daily palettes from Design Seeds to make a quilt design inspired by the photo and use the palette for the colors. The designs should take no more than 30 min or so, and the whole point is to challenge yourself and have fun.

Win on both points!

Since I am not a big user of solids, this is quite a challenge for me, but its getting easier every day. My favorite design so far is from yesterday.

I initially made the lily block as the quilt, but it seemed to much like a block trying to be a quilt! I played with the block, offset the appliques, and added an Irish Chain variation for the background. The quilt layout is an on point with 9″ blocks. This one might actually get made as a small wall hanging.  I really like how the background gives the impression of rippling water.

So far my favorite design is the one Anne showed on her blog inspired by the Artichokes. I want to see a full pattern from that!

Everyone involved have been super supportive and encouraging to each other. I am having the best time, and every day it gets a little easier.

Happy Stitching!

Flying Finish

This weekend two of my favorite quilts went winging their way down to the AQS Paducha show! Sapphire Star and Sherbert at the Beach, hands down two of my favorite quilts, were accepted. I was thrilled to find those emails in my inbox, let me tell you! I wish I could be flying away to the show to see them, and the quilts from my favorite quilters! I think there is another Myers-Badger quilt making the rounds and they are always STUNNING.  Sherbert at the Beach was accepted into the new Modern Quilt category, while Sapphire Star is in the Traditional Wall hanging from a Pattern Category.

I managed to finish up my Riley Blake project for the MQG Riley Blake Basics Challenge. I even finished it in time to enter the contest! Woot woot!

Quilts 002This is only the second pillow I have ever made. The zipper is a vertical zipper. The pillow form was the same size as the finished dimensions of the case, but I don’t think it is puffy enough. I might scrounge around for a 22″ insert. The pillow is 20″ finished, and the scallops are finished edge applique. I used Free Spirit Designer Solid in Chamois for the negative spaces, which I thought would be more off white, but is definitely a yellow hue. The pillow is a sample as well as the challenge entry. Gotta love the whole dual aviary demise with a single hard round object.

I also finished my Trend Tex Challenge quilt for the Canadian Quilters Association Quilt Canada. The show is in Ontario this year, which is much too far for me to travel, and it sounds like a lot of fun. I would love to see all the different quilts, especially because this year they have also introduced Modern Quilt Category. I would love to see what makes it in! Not to mention the stellar merchant mall. There are a plethora of modern online quilt shops in Ontario.

Quilts 005I free pieced this puppy, and matchstick quilted it. I don’t think I will be repeating that anytime soon. The quilt is 18″x20″ approx, and it took me 5 bobbins and way more time that it ever should have. But it looks great!!

Quilts 010This quilt will be auctioned off with all the other Trend Tex Challenge quilts. I hope whoever get it loves it as much as I do!

The Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild should make a great showing in the Modern categories. I think a dozen members entered multiple projects. I entered three myself.  I will keep you posted =) Until then…

Happy Stitching!

My first pattern….In Print!

This is my very first published pattern, and I am so excited to be able to FINALLY share it with you!

I always have quilt designs floating around, and when Fat Quarterly put out a call for submissions for their scraps issue, I knew exactly which quilt to make.

Presenting Putting on the Ritz!

Putting on the Ritz

Putting on the Ritz

We took the pictures over the holidays at my parents home. It’s always a gorgeous winter wonderland up on the mountain. Nothing like fresh air and snow to get your heart going! It also makes the perfect backdrop for a fun, colorful quilt shoot.

Putting ont eh Ritz

You can’t see it from here, but there is a drop off behind the bend that goes down a few feet. My darling hubby scaled the embankment just so I wouldn’t have footprints in my pictures. I’m a lucky gal!

You can find Issue 16, and pretty much any other Issue, here. The Scraps issue is chock full of fantastic scrappy patterns that will bust through those scraps in no time!

I would love to see your version of Putting on the Ritz! Send me a photo of the completed top or quilt and I will be sure to share it on the blog.

Happy Stitching!

The Very Finished Caterpillar

Today was a perfect day.

I spent the morning taking a lesson from Joan at Maple Leaf Quilters on her long arm!! WOOOOOO! It was so much fun! I love quilting on the long arm! (can’t you tell I am happy?)I had always wanted to take a lesson from her, and finally found a day to do it. It was very different from free motion quilting. You use your whole body. Its like a dance, the Gammill Two-Step. So of course we had to blast some 90’s pop hits to rock out to. =)

Quilting!

Quilting!

I brought my son’s Hungry Caterpillar quilt with me to finish. It was going to be his 1st birthday present, but now it can be his 2nd birthday present. Strike one off the WIP list! I chose a simple large stipple called Inkblot and some rainbow variegated thread. It looks great, and the rainbow thread is both colorful and hidden at the same time.

IMG_00000214Maple Leaf Quilters is located in beautiful Tsawwassen, BC. Yes its spelled correctly =) Its 1 block from the waterfront and a lovely, light filled space perfect for quilting. If your going to be in the lower mainland for a time or don’t mind sending your quilts out, I highly recommend them! I will be using them for all my large quilts from now on. I love the look of a long armed quilt, and it is very hard to achieve the kind of tension on the layers you can get from the long arm set up. My space is also limited behind my machine, which makes quilting larger quilts….. challenging, as a nice word.

When I got home the little guy was so excited about his quilt that he couldn’t wait for mommy to bind it, out of the bag and on to the floor for a game of “Night Night Baby” Normally he tucks his Pooh-Bear under all the blankets and cushions in the house, but this time it was all about him! He was not happy when I took the quilt to square and bind, and insisted on “helping” me sew the binding on. Read: press the Automatic Thread Cutter every 8″ or so. But I don’t mind, because he is warm and snuggly, and very much a little boy who doesn’t want to be snuggly, so I take what I can get!

Night Night Baby

Night Night Baby

The afternoon was spent at the park with the family for an afternoon of play and a photo shoot. The bright colors really stood out in the playground! It was a rare sunny day today, normally it rains from November to April, so we took full advantage.

January 012

Hubby is getting really good at holding quilts. No fingers or toes sticking out!

January 038

As an added bonus to the day, there was a pair of bald eagles sounding off in a tree in nearby. They really are huge, majestic birds, but the sound they make seems so undignified! Squawk Squawk! Maybe trying to trick the resident seagulls a little closer, or fighting over who has to clean the bathroom? Either way, its one of the very few times I wish I had a mega zoom lens.

January 006

Right at the top of the center left tree, you can make out the little brown and white blots. =)

I hope your day was a good one wherever you are!

Happy Stitches,

2013 Year in Review

Welcome, welcome, to the first post of 2014! woo hoo!!

Life has been steadily getting busier and busier, as the little one grows up faster than I ever thought possible and some amazing opportunities have come knocking at our front door. 2014 is going to be a busy, wonderful year!!

I thought I would look back at 2013 and all the fun there was to be had last year. I got way more accomplished than I expected. Most of it went out the front door in the form of squishy packages of swapping awesomeness. A couple things are STILL waiting for their big reveal *wink* and a final UFO that is so close to being done I can almost bind it! I would say taste it, but people find it odd when I lick my fabric ^.^

Here are all the finished quilts and large projects from last year. My favorite is definitely Imperial Splendor!

And who could forget all the swap blocks? I was part of the Star Block Quilting Bee on Flickr, as well as the 3×6 Bee. I had to take a break from all the swapping, because I was getting nothing done on my own projects.  It turns out I also forgot to take pictures of 6 sets of blocks for the Star Block Bee *sigh*

and of course the finishes that I can’t show yet…….

The biggest finish of the year by far was the purge and reorganization of my sewing room and fabric stash. It was emotional and cleansing. I actually found a before picture, taken in March. The cube shelves are a 4×4 grid. There was a lot of fabric. Now the farthest 4 have quilts nicely folded in them.

Thank you for taking a trip down memory lane with me, and for following along on my adventures in quilting.

May your year be filled with Happy Stitches!

Fun Happenings

Ahhh, there is nothing like the smell of a freshly opened mail order of fabric. And the feel. And the sight…..I love fabric….

I do realize the irony of this post, being as that my last post was all about the purge of an overflowing fabric collection. But in my defense……it was pretty! Aaaand it may have been the fabric order that pushed me over the edge into what was I thinking I have so much!

Ha ha, well, it is, but really I did purchase for a purpose. Many of the prints are going to be my go-to bindings. I have been browsing though a lot of Maureen Cracknell’s gallery of quilts. She made a calendar, how cool is that? Anywho, I loved the fabrics she was using for binding. I have always been a little hesitant to use a fabric for binding that was not part of the main quilts. She pulls it off so well that I have been inspired to try. I actually purchased some of the same fabrics that she uses. I absolutely adore the look of Anna Maria Horners Loulouthi in Hugs and Kisses in Wine as a binding.

I also got an email notice that my Long Road Home quilt has been put up in the EQ7 Quilt Gallery as the feature quilt! I submitted the design and the finished quilt last week. Its an amazing, inspiring gallery. You can see my quilt and many others here at doyoueq.com/quilt-gallery.

I am picking up a secret quilt from the long arm tomorrow. I can’t wait to share it with you. Here is a little sneaky peeky to get you excited! And yes, I did use my EQ7 for this one =)

New Beginnings

It all started innocently enough. A random compliment of a friends closet. How tidy and organized it was.

“You should come over and do my closet” I (half) jokingly stated.

” Sure, I love to organize things!” She replied

We continued with our play-date.

Fast forward to Monday. She was going to be free, did I want to do something? “We could go to a movie, or organize your closet. Or whatever”

I chose whatever.

” Alright, I will be there at 8!”

*knock knock*

” So where is this closet?”

*Gulp*

I didn’t take a before picture. I don’t think it would have come close to conveying just how much was stuffed into those little square shelves. While I went to grabs us a couple of drinks (no, not those kind, though by the end of the night I could have used…. like…eight) she started pulling fabric. And pulling. And PULLING. I really did not know how much I had in there! And dangnabbit woman, you were fast! There was no time to turn back. in 5 minutes a lifetime of collection was out and in my face.

I

Have

A

PROBLEM

A big, scary problem. One we probably all have, but don’t realize it until it’s staring us in the face from every flat surface in the room.

PURGE BABY PURGE! 003

That picture marks the halfway point of the night. HALFWAY!!!!

PURGE BABY PURGE! 002

It was an intervention. A cleansing of the soul. It broke my heart to see some of the beautiful pieces hidden that could have been used. Forgotten, forlorn fabrics that were never going to see the light of day because I had grown out of them. Sentimental pieces, one never even cut into, from my very quilt shop excursion with my grandmother. All stuffed into a closet and largely ignored.

This was the hardest thing I ever had to do. That includes childbirth. We sat on the floor, and she kept me focused. We talked about the fabrics, and the reasons why it needed to be done, why some never were used, and how it got to this point. For the most part, it was such a huge job that I never got around to sorting it, and it piled and accumulated until it was a scary closet monster.  I also think I did not want to face the reality of how much fabric I have actually purchased over the years.

PURGE BABY PURGE! 006

Here is the walk of shame. All the pretty, beautiful fabrics that I realistically would never use in a project. As a quilter, my tastes and vision have morphed and changed so much that many things I thought were perfect for such and such a quilt, are no longer appealing. I vividly remember the feeling of discovery, how it was a gorgeous piece with so much potential. I can still appreciate the fabrics, their potential and beauty, but the ugly truth is I can no longer see myself using some of them in a quilt.  Some people might think “gee, whats the big deal?” But I think most of you will understand. That is why I chose to share with you.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my friend. She kept me on track and strong. Hard realities with compassion and understanding. Tonight we are going through and sorting the bags further. Some of the fabric will end up in my etsy shop. The majority will be given away to a worthy organization called Victoria’s Quilts Canada. Victoria’s Quilts is a non-profit group of volunteers that take donations of fabric and quilt making supplies and turns it into quilts for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. So far this year they have given away 2223 quilts. This year. Since its inception in 1999 they have freely given almost 34,000 quilts to cancer patients.  There is Victoria’s Quilts in the States as well, which was founded in 1998.

IMG_00000066

Here is the after picture. Organized, and a lot less full. I still need some storage solutions for my heirloom quilts as you can see across the top. UFO’s are in clear bins and clearly marked with the project name. There are still many to go through, and decisions to be made about unquilted tops, and the finished quilts languishing in the closet. Some have already found forever homes. That makes me happy, because our quilts are made to be enjoyed.

Blogathon Canada Wrapup

Today was the last day of Sew Sisters Blogathon Canada week. I hope everyone had fun checking out new Canadian bloggers andentered for some great giveaways.  I know I added a few new blogs to my inbox and a few more projects to my one-day list. I really should write that down but it might scare me.

I spent the last week making reuable coffee sleeves, quilting, and madley sewing owl ornaments. Yep, I did it….again…….

I know, I said never again. But I didn’t really mean it. 😉

I also spent time reading the first of hopeful many installments of Anne from Play Crafts wonderful Color Chat series.  It was very inspiring and informative and I hope she continues. I also like looking at all her pretty fabric and wishing I could spend an hour in her sewing room….

How did you spend Blogathon Week?
